In one Australian study, the average amount of sleep over a 24-hour period among 554 four- to six-month-olds was 14 hours. The amount of variation is also clear if you look at how babies actually sleep. "These slightly different guidelines highlight the fact that even leading experts disagree about infant sleep," Gregory says. Neither body makes specific recommendations for nap versus nighttime sleep amounts. Meanwhile, sleep length recommendations from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine make no recommendations at all for infants under four months old. She points out that it has been recommended by the US's National Sleep Foundation that babies up to three months old should obtain 14-17 hours of sleep in a 24 hour period, but that as few as 11 or as many as 19 hours might be appropriate. "Just as adults differ in terms of their sleep, so do babies," says Alice Gregory, a psychology professor specialising in sleep at Goldsmiths University of London and the author of the book Nodding Off: The Science of Sleep. Short-term randomised controlled trials have found that babies given a memory task did better when they napped and, in findings that will surprise exactly zero parents, that fatigued infants had a harder time dealing with a stressful episode than alert infants.īut while that might mean we shouldn't do anything (such as deliberately forcing a child to stay awake) to inhibit sleep, it doesn't mean that every baby requires 12 hours of unbroken sleep a night and several two-hour naps per day, either. Of course, it's likely that the relationship between sleep and development goes both ways. So, it is difficult to unravel how much of the association may be the reverse: children with ADHD may simply sleep less. This would involve sleep-depriving one group of children over years. The only way to know if a certain amount (or lack) of sleep "causes" a specific condition such as ADHD, as might seem to be suggested by research showing a correlation between children who consistently slept less overnight and ADHD, would be to set up a randomised controlled study. They are also correlations, not causations. Many of these longer-term findings, however, involve school-aged children, not babies. A lack of sleep has been associated with cardiometabolic risk factors, an increased risk of ADHD and low cognitive performance, and with poorer emotional regulation, academic achievement and quality of life. Throughout the following century, although these suggested amounts declined, recommended sleep consistently ran around 37 minutes more than the actual sleep babies were getting, paving the way for decades of concerned parents.Įxperts agree that sleep is crucial for babies and young children (and, for that matter, for adults). The first "scientific" guidelines date as early as 1897, when, in a book on sleep for the London-based Contemporary Science Series, a Russian physician recommended that newborns should sleep 22 hours a day. Worrying about whether babies are getting enough sleep isn't new. "And that affects the way in which we think about what babies should be able to do, and how babies should be treated." (Read more about how sleeping through the night is a relatively new phenomenon, even for adults.) "But that's what people in Western societies have become accustomed to. "The way in which we sleep now in the 21st Century is kind of odd, in an evolutionary sense, because we weren't evolved to sleep like we're dead for an eight-hour period, and not wake up, in total silence and total darkness," says Helen Ball, professor of anthropology at Durham University and the director of the Durham Infancy and Sleep Centre. Taken too far, it can cause a great deal of anxiety and stress for parents – and even be unsafe for the babies themselves. Even some paediatricians warn parents that, if these goals aren't reached, children are less likely to get the sleep they need to grow and thrive.īut not only is this idea of independent, uninterrupted baby sleep far from universal, it is also very different to how human infants have slept through most of our species' history. Particularly in the West, an industry of sleep coaches, books and articles has sprung up, promising to help families achieve what many see as the holy grail: a baby who sleeps in a crib, alone, all night, and has several long naps during the day. Mention you've had a baby, and almost everyone will ask one thing: how is she sleeping?Īfter all, many exhausted parents look forward to the time when their baby finally sleeps through the night.

Concomitant agricultural intensification improved dietary energy supply, reduced the prevalence of undernourishment, and increased agricultural exports. In biophysical terms, the stabilization of shifting cultivation enhanced the recovery of some forest areas resulting in gross carbon sequestration while ecosystems in total remained a net source of emissions. We find that policy documents use both socio-economic and environmental arguments to substantiate land sparing at the expense of shifting cultivation. We quantify ecosystem carbon fluxes and agricultural emissions and investigate trends in agricultural production and food security. Applying an interdisciplinary mixed-methods approach, we examine how Lao land-use policies legitimize land sparing at the cost of shifting cultivation and how land use changed between 20. To contribute to this debate, we analyze the discursive dimension of land sparing efforts and their biophysical implications for Lao PDR. Land sparing policies aim at reconciling this conundrum by intensifying agriculture while conserving forests, but scientific debates prevail about their effectiveness. Land-use competition between forest conservation and agricultural food production poses major threats to climate change mitigation and food security. Moreover, rural livelihoods have become increasingly diversified as the economy of the region develops and opportunities for off-farm and non-farm employment increase. However, the cultivated area and especially the yield of both rainfed and irrigated rice have been increasing, contributing to the achievement of rice self-sufficiency at the national level. Rice production is dominated by the rainfed lowland system and is still predominantly for subsistence production of glutinous rice, with only a small proportion marketed and even less exported. These farming systems have been undergoing a transition from subsistence-based to market-oriented production. Nevertheless, as in the region as a whole, there has been a remarkable transformation of rice-based farming systems and supply chains over recent decades. Moreover, Laos has suffered the most from variability in production due to the high incidence of droughts and floods. Rice farming in Laos is the least commercialised within the Lower Mekong. Coca leaf is separately listed in Schedule I and is defined by Article 1, Paragraph 1, as: ‘The leaf of the coca bush, except a leaf from which all ecgonine, cocaine and any other ecgonine alkaloids have been removed.’ The esters and derivatives of ecgonine, which are convertible to ecgonine and cocaine, are also controlled according to that Convention. Using gas chromatography, the limit of detection in blood is 20 μg/L.Ĭocaine is listed in Schedule I of the United Nations 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. Cocaine also produces the characteristic odour of methyl benzoate when heated with a mixture of methanol and sodium hydroxide solution. A more satisfactory presumptive test is based on either cobalt thiocyanate (blue coloration) or p-dimethylbenzaldehyde (red coloration). The Marquis field test does not form a coloured product with cocaine. Street terms include coke, snow, charlie and a wide variety of others in use depending on location and setting. A typical dose of cocaine or crack is 100–200 mg at ‘street’ purity. Ingestion leads to loss of activity through enzymic hydrolysis in the gut. In illicit use, cocaine is typically snorted (insufflated), following which it is absorbed through the nasal mucosa. Typical precursors include atropine, tropinone and carbomethoxytropinone, none of which is listed in Table 1 of the above-mentioned United Nations 1988 Convention.Ĭrack is manufactured from cocaine hydrochloride by one of two main methods: either microwaving a wet mixture with sodium bicarbonate or by adding alkali to a hot saturated solution of cocaine and allowing the denser base to settle and solidify. The corresponding EU legislation is set out in Council Regulation (EEC) No 3677/90 (as later amended), which governs trade between the EU and third countries.Īlthough various methods exist for the synthesis of cocaine, they are less economic than extraction of the natural product. Sulfuric and hydrochloric acids, acetone and certain other solvents are listed in Table II, and potassium permanganate is listed in Table I, of the United Nations 1988 Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances. Concentrated hydrochloric acid is added to the solution, causing cocaine hydrochloride to settle out as a solid residue. The filtered solution is again treated with alkali to precipitate the free base, which is dissolved in acetone or other solvents. Coca paste is redissolved in sulfuric acid and potassium permanganate is added to destroy cinnamoylcocaine and other impurities. This solution is neutralised with lime, causing cocaine base (coca paste) to precipitate. The dissolved cocaine is extracted from the kerosene with sulfuric acid to produce an aqueous solution of cocaine sulfate. The leaves are moistened with lime water or other alkali and extracted with kerosene (paraffin). They are processed into cocaine hydrochloride in clandestine laboratories. The estimated minimal lethal dose is 1.2 g, but susceptible individuals have died from as little as 30 mg applied to mucous membranes, whereas addicts may tolerate up to 5 g daily.ĭried coca leaves contain up to 1 % cocaine. The plasma half-life of cocaine is 0.7–1.5 hours and is dose dependent. Some unchanged cocaine is found in the urine. When consumed with alcohol, cocaine also produces the metabolite cocaethylene. The main metabolites are benzoylecgonine, ecgonine and ecgonine methyl ester, all of which are inactive. Following a 25-mg dose, blood levels peak in the range 400–700 μg/L depending on the route of administration. Cocaine has a strong reinforcing action, causing a rapid psychological dependence, an effect even more pronounced in those who smoke cocaine base. Like amphetamine, it produces euphoria, tachycardia, hypertension and appetite suppression. It increases transmitter concentrations in both the noradrenergic and the dopaminergic synapse and also acts as an anaesthetic agent. When in the form of crack, cocaine base usually occurs as small (100–200 mg) lumps (‘rocks’).Ĭocaine has a similar psychomotor stimulant effect to that of amphetamine and related compounds. Cocaine base ( CAS-50-36-2) and the hydrochloride salt ( CAS-53-21-4) are white powders. These refer to the degree to which your hard drive gets formatted. On the compute side, Pascal introduces a new type of FP32 CUDA core that supports a form of FP16 execution where two FP16 operations are run through the CUDA core at once (vec2). On the storage side, Pascal supports FP16 datatypes, with relative to the previous use of FP32 means that FP16 values take up less space at every level of the memory hierarchy (registers, cache, and DRAM). Pascal, in turn, brings with it native support for FP16 compute for both storage and compute. In practice this meant that if a developer only needed the precision offered by FP16 compute (and deep learning is quickly becoming the textbook example here), that at an architectural level power was being wasted computing that extra precision. Prior to these parts, any use of FP16 data would require that it be promoted to FP32 for both computational and storage purposes, which meant that using FP16 did not offer any meaningful improvement in performance or storage needs. Starting with the Tegra X1 – and then carried forward for Pascal – NVIDIA added native FP16 compute support to their architectures. FP16 performance has been a focus area for NVIDIA for both their server-side and client-side deep learning efforts, leading to the company turning FP16 performance into a feature in and of itself. Speaking of architectural details, I know that the question of FP16 (half precision) compute performance has been of significant interest. With proper bribes or very effective verbal manipulation, brownies can be lured into communities suffering from these fey and attempt to drive them out. Brownies strongly dislike alps and morkos, thinking them both to be outsized louts and miserable killjoys. In truth, such places have usually simply gained a brownie or two as residents. In mortal communities, they regularly become the source of wild rumors of haunted locations or structures. They don’t fear iron, unlike many other fey, and are all too happy to steal from mortals who irritate them. Brownies, if associated with fey nobles, often serve as gamekeepers, hunters, or keepers of the hounds. Rarely, they serve fey courts, though most noble fey find them to be too rustic for palace intrigues, or too uncultured to join their retinues. They always carry spears made from fallen branches, but some have acquired blades, either by earning them as boons or stealing them when found unattended. Brownies are the wee folk of the forest and its remote, secluded villages. They work toward improving relations with mortal communities, growing the brownie population, and keeping the land free of cruel and bloodthirsty beasts.īucolic Fey. They’re more likely to be invited to serve at a fey court, but they rarely accept the invitations, preferring to protect their homes and their kin. These brownies discovered old fey magics and gained the respect of not only other brownies, but dryads, satyrs, and pixies. Brownie mystics are elders who have defeated great creatures and secured their forests from marauding ogres, rapacious drakes, or similarly dangerous foes. They can appreciate when a mortal attempts to outwit them, respecting such attempts. Brownies are tricksy and love a good prank however, they never allow a prank to do permanent harm, unless the target of their shenanigans responds with violence. When an ala or hag is in an area, brownies will band together to chase off the creature (or ask a mortal adventurer to do it). A helmet made from an acorn protects its head, and it wields a sharpened branch as a spear.īrownies look like miniature humans with slightly elven features, sporting acorn helms, and clothed in leaves, mosses, animal skins, or even occasionally doll clothing.īrownies tend to fear hags and alas, who find the tiny brownies to be a prized delicacy. While writing this review, I poked around Reddit. CoonTown was finally banned by Reddit in 2015. I wondered if any of his new relatives ever asked him about the popular subreddit called CoonTown - you can guess the contents - but “We Are the Nerds” is silent on this. The charismatic Ohanian came back as well, trying a few Reddit spinoffs that fizzled. Huffman returned and purged most of the staff. The backlash led to her abrupt departure. His replacement, Ellen Pao, tried to impose order in the office and on the site. A community manager who had a brief tenure in 2015 told Lagorio-Chafkin some of the reasons: “Child molesters, child porn, vicious stalking, rape threats, serious harassment, people taking the harassment offline and people filing police reports on each other.” One chief executive, stressed beyond endurance, simply stopped showing up for work. Reddit became so offensive it was difficult to work there. “Now any random computer programmer - or even the people who hung around them - could find themselves saddled with a pile of cash.” In early 2013, hounded by the government over a stupid stunt involving the downloading of academic journals, Swartz committed suicide. “In the old days the new money was made through theft and abuse of office,” he wrote. Aaron Swartz was brilliant, troubled and impossible, but he saw the tech economy more clearly than well-medicated people. “We Are the Nerds” is most compelling when it tells the story of a third young man who played a founding role at Reddit. It’s all here anyway: the lack of adult oversight the suck-up press the growth-at-any-cost mentality the loyal employees, by turns abused and abusive (memo from management: “You do realize you were talking about penises for 90 minutes, right?”) the defense of horrendous behavior as “free speech” the jettisoning of “free speech” when it served corporate purposes the way no one seeks permission but all expect forgiveness. You can’t blame this one on Vladimir Putin. Reddit was created by millions of Americans with a taste for darkness. The buyer was Condé Nast, home of America’s toniest magazines, but executives there had no vision either. Its founders, barely out of their teens, had no real vision. If anyone bothered to look, Reddit was proof that on the internet, the trolls were in charge.įounded in 2005, soon after Facebook, Reddit has always been something of an anomaly among companies whose content was generated by users. It was the place you went, shrouded in anonymity, for pornography, hard-core racism, revenge porn, Nazi cheerleading, Jew-baiting, creepshots, fat-shaming, mindless anarchy and pictures of dead kids or of women who had been beaten. Google, figuring it had solved the problems of the living, launched a venture to defeat death.Įven then, at a moment of techno-optimism we are unlikely to see again in our lifetimes, Reddit was a toxic swamp. Journalists revered Twitter for giving a megaphone to oppressed groups like, well, journalists. $28.įive years ago, it seemed like a swell idea for Mark Zuckerberg to connect every human being on the planet, because we would all sit around singing “Kumbaya” and ordering from Amazon.
